Everyone Loves Eschatology

Everyone Loves Eschatology

“Every new beginning is some other beginning’s end.”

–Closing Time by Semisonic

Put overly bluntly eschatology is the study of the end times. I believe we as humans a built in fascination with this subject because it is hard-wired into our DNA. We want to know how the story (of human history) ENDS! We are willing to endure so many final books of trilogies being split into two films for this very reason (I’m looking at you Hunger Games!).

The source of this post is a bit funny. I was struck by the implicit eschatology of a victim on “Elementary” who happened to be a “prepper,” as in a person who is preparing for some sort of global doomsday disaster. This person believed that the world was ending soon and so bought into this belief that he was willing to spend exorbitant amounts of resources to prepare for it. Not only did this person have all the supplies, and a plan for when things when south, but he also spent $100,000 to reserve his own spot at a luxury bunker (never thought I would put those two words together in a phrase).

So, here’s my question, if we as Christians believe in a “Last Day” (Armageddon was a place/story in the Bible before it was a movie about an asteroid), then what are we doing about it? Shouldn’t we be “preppers” of a sort? Did you know most references to the “Last Day” in the letters of Paul and Peter are preambles to encouragements to live godly and generous lives? What of our time, treasure and talent are we investing in prepping for Eternity?
